THE OLD MASTER JOINS THE YOUNG MAESTRO FOR LANDJAM 2015

"A bluegrass legend will share the stage with a musical prodigy for the 7th annual Piedmont Land Conservancy LandJam 2015, October 16th at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro.  Proceeds from the event will benefit PLC’s land conservation efforts in the North Carolina Piedmont. This year marks the organization 25th year, with over 22,000 acres protected during that time.
The world renowned David Grisman Bluegrass Experience will be joined for the event by one of the fastest rising stars in bluegrass, Sierra Hull. While having played piano, saxophone, and mandolin since being a teenager, David Grisman joined his first bluegrass band while attending college in 1963. His progressive and jazz influenced mandolin style landed him spots in many legendary bands, including Red Allen’s Kentuckians, Earth Opera, Great American String Band, and as a founding member of Old and In The Way – an infamous collaboration with Peter Rowan and Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead. Because he couldn't think of what to call his unique, highly intricate, harmonically advanced hybrid of acoustic bluegrass, folk, and jazz, Grisman offhandedly decided to call it "Dawg music" -- a name which stuck. Sierra Hull started playing mandolin at an even earlier age than Grisman. Given her first mandolin at age 8, by the time she was 11 Hull was invited by Allison Krauss to play the Grand Ole Opry. She signed a record deal by age 14, and cut her first solo record release at 16. After playing for several years in venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Prairie Home Companion, and even the White House, Hull accepted Berklee’s most prestigious award, the Presidential Scholarship, a first ever for a bluegrass musician. Since that time, Hull has racked up a number of albums, collaborations, and compilations with some of the world’s most notable musicians. Both Grisman and Hull will be joined on stage by their own bands for LandJam 2015. “We look forward to celebrating our 25th anniversary celebration with these two virtuoso mandolin players,” explains Kevin Redding, Executive Director of the PLC, “ but keep in mind that each of their band members are fantastic musicians in their own right. These guys surround themselves with great talent, so there is sure to be something for everyone.”
All proceeds from the LandJam 2015 will go to benefit Piedmont Land Conservancy in securing and protecting more natural heritage in the Piedmont area. The concert will be held at 8:00 on Fri., Oct. 16, at the Carolina Theatre in Greensboro, NC. Tickets are on sale now at the Carolina Theatre box office, 336-333-2605.
