"Tomorrow, residents of two apartment complexes that were scenes of recent homicides will be visited by Greensboro police officers to hear residents’ concerns and discuss crime prevention measures.
The outreach is an effort by officers and GPD partners to reassure the residents of Arbor Crest Apartments and Apple Ridge Apartments that they have the power to make their community safer. Joining officers in the effort are police chaplains and advocates from the Child Response Initiative, a collation of service providers to help children exposed to violence.
“The people who live in the complexes have seen a lot of police activity recently,” said Capt. Jeff Lowdermilk, Commander of the Southern Patrol Division. “Understandably, there was a need for a large police presence as we were investigating the crimes that occurred there. But now that the initial police response is complete, we want to get back in touch with the residents and talk about how we can partner to improve their quality of life.”
In addition to listening to residents’ concerns, officers will talk with residents and apartment staff about measures they can take to make their communities safer. “Neither of the victims lived in these apartments,” explained Lowdermilk. “So why were these offenses committed at these places? What can we do to make these communities less attractive to criminals? That’s the main goal of visits---helping make the areas even better places to live.”
GPD will offer security assessments, recommendations on how to implement Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design measures, and provide guidance on how to establish a Community Watch.
The team will meet in the Lake Townsend Room in the Water Resources Center at 2602 S. Elm Eugene Street at 10:30 am on Sept. 27th. The group plans to be at Arbor Crest Apartments on Covey Lane at 11:00 am, and Apple Ridge Apartments on Mystic Drive at 12:30 pm.
